Explore cannabis with confidence.

Understanding your options starts with clear information. Get familiar with common cannabis terms, explore different product formats, and discover useful questions to ask during your visit.

This guide provides general information and is not personalized medical advice.

Cannabis Basics

THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol) are cannabinoids — naturally occurring compounds found in the cannabis plant. THC is the main compound associated with feeling “high”; CBD does not produce that effect in the same way.

Cannabinoid content and product format are two different ways of describing a product. “Edible” or “flower” tells you the format; the label tells you what cannabinoids it contains and how much.

Individual experiences vary. The same product can feel different from one person to another.

Product labels, serving information, and verified testing offer more useful details than a category name alone. When comparing options, look at both the format and the THC and CBD amounts rather than relying on a name or appearance.

Sativa, Indica & Hybrid

These are the most common labels you’ll see on cannabis menus. Here’s what people usually mean by each, and why someone might reach for one over another.

Sativa

Often associated with an uplifting, energetic experience.

Sativa-labeled products are commonly sought out by people looking for a more upbeat experience. They’re often associated with daytime use, social settings, and a feeling of mental stimulation.

Why someone might choose it:

  • They’re looking for an energetic or uplifting feeling.
  • They prefer an experience commonly associated with daytime.
  • They’re interested in a more lively, social experience.

“Daytime” is a common association only — never drive, operate machinery, or work in safety-sensitive roles under the influence of cannabis.

Indica

Often associated with a relaxed, wind-down experience.

Indica-labeled products are commonly sought out by people looking for a calmer, more laid-back experience. They’re often associated with evenings, quiet time, and winding down.

Why someone might choose it:

  • They’re looking for a relaxed feeling.
  • They prefer an experience commonly associated with evening use.
  • They want a more laid-back experience during downtime.

Hybrid

A mix of cannabis lineages, with a wide range of possible experiences.

Hybrid describes cannabis bred from mixed lineages commonly labeled sativa and indica. Some products are described as sativa-dominant, others as indica-dominant, and some as balanced. People often explore hybrids when they’re interested in characteristics associated with both categories.

Why someone might choose it:

  • They’re interested in a combination of uplifting and relaxing qualities.
  • They want to explore a product that leans toward their preferred experience.
  • They’ve enjoyed a particular hybrid before and want to compare similar options.

“Balanced hybrid” describes how a product is categorized — not guaranteed balanced effects or equal amounts of THC and CBD.

Understanding CBD

What is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a cannabinoid found in cannabis. Unlike THC, it is not the main compound responsible for cannabis’s “high.” CBD content alone doesn’t tell you how much THC a product contains.

Does CBD mean THC-free?

Not necessarily. CBD products can also contain THC. Check the THC amount as well as the CBD amount, and ask about verified testing information. We only describe a product as “THC-free” when verified product information supports it.

We can’t make any guarantees about drug testing.

What formats can contain CBD?

CBD can appear in flower, oils and tinctures, edibles, and topicals — this doesn’t mean we stock every option. Ask us about current availability.

Hemp-derived cannabinoid products and adult-use cannabis products are regulated differently in New York. Purenergy is a licensed adult-use cannabis dispensary; our team can explain the labels on the products available here.

Why might someone explore a CBD-focused product?

Some people are curious about CBD-focused options because they want products with lower THC content. That doesn’t mean a particular product cannot cause intoxication — always read the label.

What should I check on the label?

Look for CBD and THC amounts, serving information, and testing details. Bring any questions to our team.

A balanced note

CBD can have side effects and can interact with medications. For questions about medications or your health, please talk with a qualified healthcare professional.

Understanding Edibles

What are edibles?

Foods or beverages made with cannabis, such as gummies or chocolates, that are eaten or drunk.

Why someone might choose this format

Edibles avoid inhalation and come with labeled serving amounts. They are not inherently safer, healthier, or more predictable than other formats.

How it differs from inhaled products

Effects take longer to begin and may last longer than inhaled cannabis. Effects may not be fully felt for four hours or more.

Taking more before the first serving takes effect can lead to an unexpectedly intense experience.

What to check before choosing

Note the difference between THC per serving and THC in the entire package — a package may contain several servings.

  • Store cannabis securely, out of reach of children and pets — edibles can look like ordinary food.
  • Cannabis can impair you. Do not drive or operate machinery under the influence.
  • Read the product’s serving size and directions before consuming. A single piece or container is not always a single serving. Don’t take more simply because you haven’t felt effects yet.

Compare Product Formats

Format describes how a product is prepared and used, not whether it contains THC or CBD. Compare the label, serving information, and directions alongside your preferences. This is a guide to formats, not a promise that every option is currently in stock.

Flower

What it is: The dried, cured buds of the cannabis plant, typically inhaled.

Why someone may prefer it: Some people prefer a minimally processed product and the ability to see and smell it before choosing.

Important considerations: Inhalation involves smoke or vapor. Effects from inhaled cannabis generally begin sooner than from edibles. Check the label for cannabinoid content.

Edibles

What it is: Foods or beverages infused with cannabis, eaten or drunk.

Why someone may prefer it: Avoids inhalation and comes with labeled serving amounts.

Important considerations: Onset is delayed and effects may last longer. Effects may not be fully felt for four hours or more. Note THC per serving versus per package.

Oils / tinctures

What it is: Liquid cannabis or CBD preparations, often packaged with a dropper.

Why someone may prefer it: Measured amounts and a non-inhaled option.

Important considerations: Products differ by formulation and intended route of use (for example, swallowed or held under the tongue). Follow the label; onset varies by product.

Topicals

What it is: Lotions, balms, and similar products applied to the skin.

Why someone may prefer it: A format some people explore when they prefer not to ingest or inhale a product.

Important considerations: Check labeling for cannabinoid content and directions. Ask a healthcare professional about any skin or medical concerns.
